Composition

The office is led by a director, a principal deputy director, and a chief operating officer.

The director is appointed by the president with Senate approval.

The work of the office is split between:

  • Mission Integration Directorate

  • Policy & Capabilities Directorate

Each directorate is led by a deputy director.

History

In 2004, the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act established the office to oversee the CIA. The director assumed many of the responsibilities of the former director of central intelligence.

Biden established the director of national intelligence as a Cabinet-level position.
