The office is led by a director. This positions is appointed by the president with Senate approval.


History

Predecessors to this office include the Special Action Office for Drug Abuse Prevention which Nixon created in 1971, and the Office of Drug Abuse Policy which Carter created in 1977.

In 1988, the Anti-Drug Abuse Act established this office.

Clinton established the director as a Cabinet-level position in 1993, which Bush maintained. Obama however removed the director from the Cabinet in 2009.
