United States Foreign Service

The United States Foreign Service is a DOS personnel agency for the United States diplomatic apparatus.


Composition

The Foreign Service is overseen by the Undersecretary of State for Management.

The service is led by a director general.

Diplomatic missions, consulates, and embassies are staffed by the service, including:

  • chiefs of mission
  • ambassadors
  • members of the Senior Foreign Service
  • foreign service officers ('generalists')
  • foreign service specialists
  • foreign service nationals
  • consular agents

Note that the first four categories of service staff are presidential appointments subject to Senate approval.
