Council for National Security

The Council for National Security was a junta that ruled Thailand between 2006 and 2008.

History

The junta was led by Sonthi Boonyaratglin. He appointed Surayud Chulanont as a puppet prime minister.

The CNS was closely affiliated with a civilian movement called the People's Alliance for Democracy. PAD dissolved after the coup, declaring that their mission was complete.

Sonthi resigned from his military post in 2007 but continued to exert pressure on the puppet government. Anupong Paochinda became the new commander-in-chief of the military. Sonthi joined the Democrat Party and formally became deputy prime minister.

Despite having rewritten the constitution and voting rules, in the December 27th, 2007 elections, the Thaksin-affiliated People's Power Party won. The PAD was re-created to protest against Samak Sundaravej's government. The movement renounced non-violence and began a civil war to overthrow the elected government. The protests and sieges ended only after the Constitutional Court outlawed the People's Power Party, banned its leaders from government, and members of the CNS coerced MPs of the former PPP to transfer to the Democrat Party and vote for Abhisit Vejjajiva.
