History
The People's Power Party was founded in 1998 and remained a minor force in politics for about a decade.
On September 19th, 2006, the royal army overthrew the elected government of Thaksin Shinawatra. In 2007, the Constitutional Court declared that his Thai Rak Thai Party was outlawed and leaders were banned from government.
For the December 27th, 2007 elections, many members of the former Thai Rak Thai Party ran with the PPP. Party leader Samak Sundaravej openly claimed to be Thaksin-affiliated. While the PPP did win the election and Samak served as prime minister for a few months, the Constitutional Court similarly declared that the party was outlawed and leaders (i.e. the sitting elected government) were banned from government.
