Confederations
Mongolia was inhabited by a variety of nomadic steppe nations. Principal among them were the khanlig (confederations).

Khamag Mongol
Naiman
Mergid
Tatar
The Tatars were a Turkic nation on the steppe, and geographically were the closest to China. Likely because of this proximity, early historic accounts refer to all Mongolians as Tatars.
Mongol Empire
Temüjin united the tribes through conquest and was named khagan (khan of khans) and Genghis Khan.
The direct successor states are:
Yuan dynasty of China
Golden Horde centered in Crimea
- Ilkhanate centered in Iran
- Chagatai Khanate between all three
Much of the lands of the latter two were reunited by the Timurid Empire, which also claimed to be a Mongol successor state.
Dynasties
Borjigin
The Borjigin had been khans of the Khamag Mongol khanlig for generations before Genghis Khan raised their standing to a khaganate.
The collapse of the Mongol Empire resulted in many dynasties claiming to be the heir of the Borjigin. The most substantial dynasty to claim this is the Yuan.
