History
Hata was elected to the diet in 1969 for the LDP.
In 1993 he led a breakaway group to found the Japan Renewal Party and joined the grand coalition government under Morihiro Hosokawa.
After Hosokawa resigned in April 1994, Hata was elected prime minister. The Japan Socialist Party shortly left the coalition, leaving the coalition with a minority government. Rather than face a vote of no confidence, Hata resigned on June 30th, 1994.
In late 1994, the Japan Renewal Party merged with many of the former coalition parties to found the New Frontier Party.
Hata drifted to the Sun Party, to the Good Governance Party, and to the Democratic Party of Japan.
