Morihiro Hosokawa
Morihiro Hosokawa (細川 護煕) was prime minister of Japan.
History
Morihiro was born into the noble Hosokawa family. His maternal grandfather was the imperial prime minister and prince Fumimaro Konoe.
LDP
Hosokawa was elected to the House of Councillors in 1971 for the LDP.
In 1983 he left national politics to serve as governor of Kumamoto.
Japan New Party
In 1992 Hosokawa returned to national politics by founding the Japan New Party. He was elected to the House of Councilors again that year.
In the 1993 general elections, the LDP lost enough seats for a grand coalition government to form. Hosokawa rallied the parties together and was elected prime minister on August 9th.
Amid a 100 million yen loan scandal, Hosokawa resigned in April 1994. The grand coalition government was taken over by Tsutomu Hata.
Later Political Career
Hosokawa drifted to the New Frontier Party, to the From Five Party, to the Good Goverance Party, to the Democratic Party of Japan. He also worked closely with Junichiro Koizumi.
Hosokawa became head of his noble family in 2005.
Hosokawa ran unsuccessfully for the Tokyo gubernatorial seat in 2014. The election was effectively a proxy war between the Koizumi and the Abe factions.
