History

The march of Styria was raised to a duchy by Frederick Barbarossa in 1180.

In 1254, following a decade of war, the duchy was ceded to Béla IV.

In 1260, the local nobility would rise up and force Béla to renounce the duchy in favor of Ottokar II.

The duchy became a Habsburg crownland under Rudolf I.

The Treaty of Trianon divided the region into Upper Styria and Lower Styria, with the former staying in Austria and the latter going to Slovenia. A majority of the population and the duchal capital, Graz, remained in Austria.
