Association of Southeast Asian Nations
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is an economic and political union of sovereign states.
History
In 1961, an Association of Southeast Asia (ASA), was established by Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaya. In 1967, Indonesia and Singapore were invited to also sign the Bangkok Declaration to found the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

East Timor and Papua New Guinea are observers and have applied for accession into the association.
