Anglo-Spanish War

The Anglo-Spanish War was a postcursor of the War of Spanish Succession and the War of the Quadruple Alliance.

The war was ended through the Treaty of Seville.


Antecedents

By 1726, diplomacy between Spain and England had become tense over the issue of Gibraltar. The territory was seized during the War of Spanish Succession and Spain did not intend to recognize its loss.


History

The English Navy was dispatched to blockade Porto Bello, largely to prevent the Spanish Navy from being rebased to continental Europe. This was ultimately a failure.

Conclusion and Aftermath

The Treaty of Seville in 1729 simply re-established the status quo ante bellum, allowing for the conflict to simmer until the War of Jenkins' Ear erupted in 1739.
