Red Eagle

Red Eagle, also known as Bill Weatherford, was a leader of the Creek nation and the Red Stick faction.

History

Red Eagle's mother was from a prominent Creek family, while his father was a wealthy trader.

Reign

Red Eagle organized a traditionalist paramilitary known as the Red Sticks.

Tensions flared between this faction and the decentralized advocates for integration. But rather than flaring into a civil war, this conflict effectively merged with the nearby Tecumtha's War and the larger War of 1812. Jackson was charged with eliminating the Red Sticks.

Prominent military actions of this war include the massacre of Red Stick traders at Burnt Corn Creek, and the massacre of American and Lower Creek civilians at Fort Mims.

The Red Sticks were ultimately defeated, and Red Eagle surrendered himself at Fort Jackson. He was spared as an authoritative negotiator for the Creek nation; the Treaty of Fort Jackson ceded all of their territories to the United States.
