John Sherman

John Sherman was a Whig, then early Republican, politician. He served as a congressman, senator, secretary of the Treasury, and secretary of state from Ohio.


History

Sherman was first elected to Congress to represent Ohio 13th district in 1857. He was then elected to the Senate in 1861. He served as a senator until he was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 1977, under the Hayes administration.

He returned to the Senate in 1881 and became president pro tempore in 1885. In this period, his most influential bills are written and passed.

He became Secretary of State in the McKinley administration in 1897.


Policies

Sherman wrote the Sherman Antitrust Act.

After the House and Senate passed conflicting bills regarding silver coinage, Sherman participated in the reconciliation committee that produced the Sherman Silver Purchase Act.
