History

In 1948, Williams was elected governor of Michigan over Kim Sigler. This was a notable split ticket vote, as the Dewey carried the state over Truman.

In 1968, he was appointed ambassador to the Philippines under the Johnson administration. He served for less than a year.

In 1970 he was elected to the Michigan supreme court. He became the chief justice in 1983. He retired in 1987.
