United States Department of Homeland Security

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is an executive department of the federal government. It oversees agencies responsible for national security, infrastructure security, anti-terrorism activities, and disaster response.


Composition

The department is led by a secretary and deputy secretary.

History

Bush created DHS in 2003 to centralize and coordinate emergency response agencies, largely in response to the September 11th terrorist attacks in New York City.
