Description
Indian Civil Rights Act
Titles II through VII are more generally known as the Indian Civil Rights Act.
The act extends the U.S. Constitution to Native Americans.
Fair Housing Act
Title VIII is more generally known as the Fair Housing Act.
The Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity was established under HUD to enforce prohibitions of discrimination in housing.
Anti-Riot Act
Title X is more generally known as the Anti-Riot Act.
This act establishes that to "incite, promote, encourage, participate in and carry on a riot" is a felony.
History
Johnson introduced the bill in 1966 but it failed to pass.
In 1967, it was re-introduced by Celler and Hart.
The act was passed and signed into law amid the protests and riots caused by the assassination of King in April 1968.
