Bureau of Politico-Military Affairs
The Bureau of Politico-Military Affairs is a DOS bureau that liaises with the DOD.
Composition
The bureau is led by an assistant secretary for Political-Military Affairs (PM).
The bureau is further subdivided into offices, some of which are led by deputy assistant secretaries (e.g., the deputy assistant secretary for Defense Trade Controls).
History
Coordination of the military and foreign service was originally tasked to the office of the undersecretary for political affairs (P).
A new bureau of Politico-Military Affairs was created in 1969. It was led by a director with the rank of an assistant secretary.
In 1986, the director role became subject to presidential appointment with advice and consent of the Senate, and formally was re-designated as assistant secretary for Political-Military Affairs.
