Thomas Radclyffe

Thomas Radclyffe was a statesman of Great Britain.

History

After his father died in 1557, Radclyffe inherited the earldom of Sussex.

English control in Ireland was diminishing in Mary's reign. Despite royal laws forbidding immigration by Scots, Scottish-Gaelic clans consolidated power and repudiated the crown. Radclyffe served as Mary's lord deputy of Ireland, and was tasked with subjugating these chiefs and lords. He was largely unable to accomplish this, though his second-in-command Sidney had some successes. Elizabeth only briefly retained him as lord lieutenant before rearranging command.
