History
Thomas Hay was the eldest son of George Hay, earl of Kinnoull (sometimes spelled Kinnoul).
His grandfather, Thomas Hay (same name), died in 1718, allowing him to use the courtesy title viscount of Dupplin.
He was first elected to the Parliament in 1736.
Hay was first appointed to the Treasury in 1754.
His father died in 1758, leaving him to inherit the titles. (Note that this is a Scottish peerage, so does not grant a seat in the House of Lords.)
After Cavendish was dismissed in 1762, he followed him by resigning in protest. He resigned from politics hereafter.
