History
Augustus was a grandson of Charles FitzRoy, the duke of Grafton. Following the death of his uncle, George FitzRoy, in 1747, he became his grandfather's heir apparent and began to use the courtesy title of earl of Euston.
He entered the House of Commons in 1756 for a pocket borough. His grandfather died the following year, leaving him to succeed his titles and a seat in the Lords.
FitzRoy was appointed to government in 1765 under Pitt. Due to Pitt's failing health, he was the effective leader of government starting in 1767. He resigned in 1770, only to return to government under North the next year.
