To help end war in Ukraine, the Quad should back India to engage Russia
To help end war in Ukraine, the Quad should back India to engage Russia was written by Adarsh Badri in 2023. It was published digitally by the Lowy Institute on the Interpreter blog. Find it at: https://www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpreter/help-end-war-ukraine-quad-should-back-india-engage-russia.
The author examines the Russian invasion of Ukraine through the lens of a Pacific geopolitical security dilemma.
The author argues that India's diplomatic and economic relationship with Russia is bandwagoning; and more importantly, there is an opportunity for the United States to supplant that Russian role. Indian foreign policy places priority with border security against China and Pakistan. If Indian-Russian diplomacy worsens, Russia can quickly pivot toward supporting Chinese land claims. To maintain the status quo, India has therefore become wrapped up in the Russian geopolitical sphere. The Quad can be leveraged to gently support Indian border security and create a viable alternative strategy.
