Provinces
Thailand is divided into 76 districts (changwat).
Bangkok is a special administrative area, which administratively is similar to a district.
Governance
Provinces are led by governors (phu wa ratchakan changwat), which are appointed by the Ministry of the Interior.
Bangkok, as a special administrative area, elects its governor to 4-year terms. Despite this, the National Council for Peace and Order had appointed a governor after the 2014 coup.
Districts
Provinces are composed of districts (amphoe).
Bangkok, as a special administrative area, is instead composed of khet.
Governance
Districts are led by chief officers (nai amphoe), which are appointed by the Ministry of the Interior.
Within the province of Chonburi, Pattaya is a self-governing municipal area. It is instead led by a mayor.
