The National Bank of Romania (BNR) (Banca Națională a României) is the national bank of Romania.
Composition
History
The Romanian currency is leu (plural lei).
Policies
For significant portions of history, lei were not exchangeable with any other currency.
BNR is a member of the ESCB.
Romanian governments since Popescu-Tăriceanu have made plans to adopt the Euro. The original target of 2013 was delayed to 2015 in 2012; the next year the Ponta acknowledged a realistic target of 2020 but settled on an official target of 2019. In 2018 the target was reset to 2024. In 2021 the target was reset to 2029. While the official target has not been updated yet, the current budget deficit means that the timetable has been missed.
