Bogdan I
Bogdan I was the voivode and first prince of Moldavia.
History
Charles I welcomed the exodus of ethnic Vlachs (Wallachians), lked by Bogdan, out of Serbia. they were settled into Maramureș and surrounding areas.
The voivodeship of Maramureș was an elected position chosen by the local knezes. Bogdan eventually was elected to that position.
Reign
Bogdan became a rival to Charles I and, when Louis I came to power, he was deposed. Bogdan instead seized the voivodeship of Moldavia and declared independence. Louis called for an invasion and occupation of the territory, but was unable to hold it militarily.
Legacy
Bogdan's grandson Lațcu brought Moldavia back into Hungarian vassalization when Louis I became king of Poland.
Bogdan is remembered as Bogdan the Founder, as his independent principality is the first iteration of an independent Romania.
