Jadwiga

Jadwiga was queen of Poland and co-ruled with her husband Władysław II.

History

After Louis I died in 1382, the crown was intended for his eldest surviving daughter, Mary. The Polish nobility demanded that their monarch live within Poland, effectively demanding that Jadwiga inherit instead and be removed from Elizabeth's influence.

During this interregnum, Władysław II consilidated power as an alternative candidate for the monarchy.

Reign

In 1384 Elizabeth was forced to concede to the noble's demands. Jadwiga left for Krakow and was crowned.

Jadwiga's betrothal and marriage to William of Habsburg was controversial among the local nobility, and through some combination of revolts and humiliations, William returned to Austria shortly after their marriage.

Jadwiga negotiated a marriage with Władysław II to establish a personal union of Poland and Lithuania.
