North Korean Monarchs
A history of North Korean monarchs.
Democratic People's Republic of Korea
A provisional government known as the People's Republic of Korea (PRK) was organized to administer Korea following Japanese surrender. The United States, however, did not recognize the PRK.
The USSR originally placed Cho Man-sik in power over the PRK in 1945, but quickly replaced him with Kim Il Sung.
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea was officially declared in 1948, with Kim as premier. He soon was additionally enshrined as chair of the Workers' Party of Korea and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army. Eventually premier was swapped for president, and party chair was swapped for general secretary.
