History

Murayama was drafted into the Imperial Army in 1944. At demobilization, he was an officer candidate. He is the only modern Japanese prime minister with military service.

Murayama was involved in the labor movement and served in local government with support from the Japan Socialist Party. In 1972, he was elected to the diet.

In October 1994, Murayama was elected party leader.

On June 30th, 1994, a coalition government consisting of the JSP, the LDP, and New Party Sakigake was established. Murayama was appointed the prime minister.

Following poor results in the 1995 House of Councillors elections, Murayama resigned and Ryuutarou Hashimoto of the LDP became prime minister.
