Joumon
The Joumon (縄文) period was characterized by a hunter gatherer society. This lasted from about 14,000 BC to about 300 BC.
Yayoi
The Yayoi (弥生) period was characterized by the emergence of agriculture in the Japanese islands.
Kofun
The span of years from about 300 to 538 AD is known as the Kofun (古墳) period. The period ends with the introduction of Buddhism.
The Yamato (大和) period is considered to encompass both the Kofun and the subsequent Asuka (飛鳥) periods.
