The 2005 General elections were called early by Koizumi. They were held on September 11th, 2005.

History
The last lower house elections were held in 2003.
As a part of Koizumi's privatization plan for Japan Post, the LDP was whipped with threats of calling elections early. While this successfully controlled dissent in the lower house, the upper house proved resistant. Koizumi declared that the bill was tied to a vote of no confidence and, after 30 LDP members rebelled, followed through on his threat.
