It is Time to Rethink the "Bullshit Jobs"
It is Time to Rethink the "Bullshit Jobs" was written by Adarsh Badri in 2024. It was published digitally on his blog. Find it at: https://adarshbadri.me/politics-society/rethink-the-bullshit-jobs/.
The author builds off of On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs and Bullshit Jobs. They summarize the theories and categories prescribed by Graeber, add their own anecdotal evidence, and reconsider the theory in the context of AI.
The author speculates that AI tools have exposed extraordinary categories of jobs to "bullshitness".
The author calls for a slowing of AI's introduction to the workforce, and for a new social contract to redistribute resources in a world where all jobs are "bullshit".
My thoughts
I believe a compelling aspect of Graeber's original article is that he does not attempt to fit the world into neat boxes of bullshit and authentic. The argument is that employees themselves are the definitive authority on their work's qualities. I'm not convinced by the assertion that there are whole categories of jobs that are suddenly bullshit due to the roll-out of AI.
