Tehran
Tehran is the capital and largest city in Iran.
History
The first settlement near Tehran was Rhages, a prominent city of Media. The city was razed during the Muslim conquest, although eventually rebuilt. It was permanently destroyed during the Mongol invasion.
Tehran emerged as a small settlement near Rhages.
Agha Mohammad Khan chose the town as the capital for Iran in part because of the small population. It rapidly modernized and grew during the reign of Reza Shah Pahlavi.
In 1941, the UK and USSR jointly invaded Iran. Tehran was occupied and, two years later, hosted the Tehran Conference.
