The University of Michigan Institute for Social Research is a social science research organization.


Description


History

The institute was founded in 1949 as a parent organization for the Survey Research Center (SRC) and the Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD).

The institute quickly expanded, establishing the Population Studies Center (PSC) in 1961 and the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) in 1962.

The Center for Political Studies (CPS) was founded in 1970 to focus on the Michigan Election Studies, formerly one of the SRC's projects.
