Czech Presidents
A history of Czech presidents.
In the early Czechoslovak Republics, the president was the effective head of state. During the communist era, the general secretary was the effective head of state, though the presidency continued to exist as a political office. In the modern Czech and Slovak Federative Republic and Czech Republic, the prime ministers are the effective head of state, while the presidency is a ceremonial figure.
The president works from Prague Castle (Pražský hrad), leading to the metonym Hrad.
