History

Sibinek was settled by Croats. Petar Kresimir IV established his capital here, leading to it also being known as Kresimirovgrad. It was conquered by the Venetians for the first time in 1116, then by the Byzantines in 1124, then by Béla II in 1133. Venice reclaimed the city in 1412. It is commonly grouped with the Dalmatian city states. It came to be known as Sebenico in this era.

Following a brief Napoleonic conquest, Sibenik was ceded to the Austrian Empire.
