History
Mississippian culture is divided into regional varieties:
Middle Mississippian, the primary division, was based around Cahokia.
Oneota (alt. Upper Mississippian)
Fort Ancient culture
Caddoan Mississippian, which evolved into the Caddo nation
Plaquemine culture
the South Appalachian Mississippian culture may have been the result of southeastern nations adopting Mississippian traditions
The Mississippian culture spread into Wisconsin around 1000. The largest settlement, Aztalan, was located near modern Madison on the Rock River. The region remained under southern influence until about 1200, at which point Oneota became more insular. This was a very decentralized society and few villages surpassed 300.
