= Italian Wars = The Italian Wars were a series of international wars involving the papal states, Ferrera, France, the Holy Roman Empire, Spain, and Venice. <> ---- == History == === War of the League of Cambria === Julius II, aiming to consolidate papal control over Romagna, created the League of Cambrai in 1508 to counter Venetian power. This brought the papal states, Alfonso I, Louis XII, Maximilian I, and Ferdinand II into war against Leonardo Loredan in 1508. By 1510 however, the pope had determined that France was the greater threat. He established the Holy League with Spain, Venice, and England and switched sides. Julius negotiated neutrality from Maximilian. Alfonso remained in the war on the side of France. Then in 1513, Leonardo and Louis created an alliance to retake and partition northern Italy between them. They quickly advanced through Milan and a truce was agreed the next year. Then following the death of Ferdinand in 1516, Charles I succeeded the throne. Consolidating control in Naples became the priority and he negotiated peace in the Treaty of Noyon. The Treaty of Brussels finally and formally ended the war in late 1516, restoring the status quo antebellum. ---- CategoryRicottone
