== History ==

Frederick was the son of '''Frederick II''', '''duke of Swabia'''.

Frederick was elected [[Germany/Monarchs#Kingdom_of_Germany|Germany]] in part as a compromise candidate. His father came from the [[Germany/Monarchs#Hohenstaufen|house of Hohenstaufen]] while his mother, '''Judith''', came from the [[Germany/Monarchs#Welf|house of Welf]]. It was hoped he could solve the multi-generational feud.

To that effect, one of his first measures was to restore '''Henry XI''' as '''duke of Bavaria'''. He compensated '''Henry II''', who had to renounce the duchy he'd been rewarded with, by raising his '''margraviate of Austria''' to a [[Austria/Monarchs#Duchy_of_Austria|duchy]].

Henry declined to join Frederick on one of his campaigns into Lombardy. For this, Henry was stripped of all titles and exiled. He was eventually restored to the lower titles, but the duchy of Bavaria went to [[Germany/Monarchs#Wittelsbach|Otto I]] and the must-reduced duchy of Saxony went to [[Germany/Monarchs#Ascania|Bernhard]].
