Visegrád Group

The Visegrád Group (V4) is an alliance within the EU among Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, and Poland.

History

The castle town of Visegrád, Hungary was selected for an 1991 international summit of Havel, Wałęsa, and Antall as an allusion to the 1335 Congress of Visegrád between John I, Charles I, and Casimir III.

The reason for the summit was primarily to coordinate reforms, and demonstrate a commitment to reforms, in preparation for joining NATO and the EU. More generally, these states are aligned in being post-communist democracies and socioeconomically right as compared to prevailing EU politics.

When Czechoslovakia separated, both Czechia and Slovakia were recognized as members of the group.
