City States
The original Dalmatian city states were trade cities that flourished and enjoyed general autonomy even as the Roman province of Dalmatia fell to invading Slavic tribes.
The city states sought protection from the Byzantine Empire and, after it fell, the republic of Venice.
Later cities came to enjoy the same status as the original city states.
