Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands are an archipelago off the Mediterranean coast of Spain. They are composed of Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

History

TODO: learn some history!

James I of Aragon conquered the islands and established the kingdom of Majorca (sometimes Mallorca). James separated this realm for his younger son, James II, to inherit. His elder son, Peter III, however did quickly subjugate and vassalize Majorca.

England began to contest Spain's hold over the archipelago in the War of Spanish Succession. The Treaty of Utrecht ceded Minorca (Menorca in England) and Gibraltar. The island briefly fell to French forces in the Seven Year War, and again during the American Revolutionary War. The Treaty of Amiens finally returned Minorca to Spanish control in 1802.
