== History ==

Dawson served as clerk of the '''Georgia House of Representatives''' from 1821 to 1833.

For 1834-1835, he was elected to the '''Georgia Senate'''.

He briefly fought in the [[UnitedStates/Creek|Creek War]] and [[UnitedStates/Seminole|Second Seminole War]].

Following the death of [[UnitedStates/JohnECoffee|Coffee]], Dawson was elected to fill the [[UnitedStates/Congress|Congressional]] seat. (At this time, Georgia elected all 9 members from a state-wide at-large district.) For this special election he ran as the [[UnitedStates/StatesRightsParty|States' Rights]] nominee, but would run as a [[UnitedStates/WhigParty|Whig]] in subsequent elections.

In 1841, Dawson ran for the Georgian gubernatorial seat. After losing to [[UnitedStates/CharlesJMcDonald|McDonald]], he also resigned from Congress.

He was elected to serve as Georgia's senator for 1849-1855.
