Vincennes
Vincennes is a city in Knox County, Indiana.
Geography
The city is settled on the Wabash.
History
The city was founded by French colonialists as part of Illinois Country.
Following the French and Indian War, the city was ceded to the British province of Quebec.
The city was captured in Clark's Illinois campaign for Virginia. In 1787, Congress reorganized the region into the Northwest Territory, and again in 1800 into the Indiana Territory. Vincennes served as the capital of the latter from establishment until 1813.
Indiana entered the union as a state in 1816. The state constitution banned slavery at establishment.
