Tecumtha
Tecumtha (alternatively Tecumseh) was a leader of the Shawnee nation.
History
Tecumtha's brother, Tenskwatawa, was a spiritual leader. He centralized control over the Shawnee and attracted a following within neighboring tribes as well.
Reign
The brothers' multi-tribe confederacy, with an effective capital at Prophetstown on the Tippecanoe, was poised to resist American settlers militarily.
Harrison was charged with the elimination of the movement. This conflict became known as Tecumtha's War. The disastrous Battle of Tippecanoe, led by Tenskwatawa, began the rapid decline of the confederacy.
Tecumtha was killed at the Battle of the Thames, ending the war.
Legacy
Tecumtha became an emblem and martyr for native nation resistance.
