The region of New Haven, particularly the harbor around the Quinnipiac, were settled by the Quinnipiac nation.
The wider region was engulfed in the Pequot War between 1636-1638, through which the Pequot were genocided and the Quinnipiac tribe was effectively vassalized to Connecticut. The primary Quinnipiac settlement, also called Quinnipiac, was purchased in 1638 by colonists from Massachusetts Bay and re-established in 1640 as New Haven.
In 1664, the city was annexed by Connecticut.
