History
The tribes sold most of their territories between the 1820s and 1850s. The Stockbridge-Munsee nation, for example, settled on a reservation built out of their former lands.
The War Department attempted to negotiate their removal to a reservation on the Crow River. They unilaterally recognized Oshkosh as a high chief, in the hope that the nation at large would also recognize him as a central authority and negotiator. Oshkosh scouted this proposed reservation, and renegotiated for a more nearby reservation on the Wolf River.
