History
The Lenape nation has Algonquin origins.
The Lenape nation settled along the Delaware, Lehigh Valley, and the lower Hudson Valley.
The Dutch negotiated for limited rights to settle in the Hudson Valley, which were later expanded by military force, until they finally outright purchased the lands to establish New Netherland. The Lenape were then conquered and vassalized by the Haudenosaunee and Susquehannock nations.
Penn purchased lands around the Delaware to establish an English colony. He and his successors engaged in a sequence of attempting to purchase lands, claiming ownership over lands that did not have a clearly recognized or present owner, and threatening residents into removal. This is known as the Walking Purchase.
The Lenape nation was gradually removed into the Ohio River basin.
One tribe of the Lenape, called the Munsee, migrated to the Oneida reservation in the early 1800s. There they merged with other migrating nations into the Stockbridge-Munsee nation.
