He was elected to represent Arkansas' 6th district in 1902, and served until his election to governor of Arkansas in 1912. However, [[UnitedStates/JeffersonDavisArkansas|Jefferson Davis]] died in the weeks between Robinson's election and swearing in. Just 13 days after taking office, he was appointed to replace Davis in the [[UnitedStates/Congress|Senate]]. In 1928, with [[UnitedStates/AlfredESmith|Al Smith]] leading the ticket, Robinson ran for the vice presidency. They lost to [[UnitedStates/HerbertHoover|Hoover]] and [[UnitedStates/CharlesCurtis|Curtis]]. Robinson was elected majority leader in 1933 and became known for an autocratic style of leadership.
