This was a notable split ticket vote, as the [[UnitedStates/ThomasDewey|Dewey]] carried the state over [[UnitedStates/HarrySTruman|Truman]]. Williams did not seek re-election in 1960. Shortly after, he was appointed [[UnitedStates/DepartmentOfState|Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs]] under the [[UnitedStates/JohnFKennedy|Kennedy]] administration. He resigned in 1966 to unsuccessfully challenge the senate seat of [[UnitedStates/RobertPGriffin|Robert P. Griffin]]. In 1968, he was appointed ambassador to the Philippines under the [[UnitedStates/LyndonBJohnson|Johnson]] administration. He served for less than a year.
