United States Foreign Service
The United States Foreign Service is a U.S. DoS personnel agency for the United States diplomatic apparatus.
Composition
The service is led by a director general.
Diplomatic missions, consulates, and embassies are staffed by the service, including:
- chiefs of mission
- ambassadors
- members of the Senior Foreign Service
- foreign service officers ('generalists')
- foreign service specialists
- foreign service nationals
- consular agents
Note that the first four categories of service staff are presidential appointments subject to Senate approval.
