United States Department of Labor

The United States Department of Labor (DOL) is an executive department of the federal government. DOL administers and enforces occupational, wage, and unemployment laws and programs.


Composition

The department is led by the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Labor.

History

An executive bureau with jurisdiction over occupational law dates back to 1888.

Roosevelt created the Department of Commerce and Labor in 1903.

In 1913, Wilson split the department into the modern DOL and DOC.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics dates back to 1884, but it was originally established within the Department of the Interior.
